Despite a three-month break between the end of last season and the beginning of their 2014 campaign, winter-time has been pretty busy at Ombra’s workshop.
After that 2013 saw them contest a stunning 32 races, the Italian team made the most of the winter break to complete a thorough rebuild of their 458s and are proceeding with their racing plans for the year.
What’s already sure is that the team led by Davide Mazzoleni will confirm their two-car commitment in the International GT Open. The line-up of one car is already complete, as Italian gentleman driver Mario Cordoni will be partnered by Stefano Gattuso. While Cordoni is a team regular, being at his third consecutive season with Ombra, Gattuso decided to keep working with the Italian outfit after a very positive experience in last year’s Monza round. Bringing speed, racecraft and a broad racing experience, Stefano will be a valuable addition to the team’s assets.
Talks for the second car are at a very advanced stage and an announcement will follow shortly.
While GT Open will be the primary programme for Ombra in 2014, the team is working on other plans too. Italian GT Championship is a likely option, and other international series will be evaluated on a race by race basis.
In the meantime the first racing commitment for Cordoni-Gattuso will come in 9-days time as the Italian duo will take part in the Paul Ricard Winter Series event, organized by GT Sport. The second car will be there too but it will be used for testing purposes only, allowing the team to try a few different drivers.
Davide Mazzoleni (Team Manager): “After our GT debut in 2012 and the expansion to a two-car programme last year, we feel that we have earned our place among the most professional teams in the sport. Often our cars were the quickest Ferraris on track, and we want to build on that to achieve even more success in 2014. Being already in the condition to confirm a two-car commitment in GT Open is ideal, as it allows us to plan our moves carefully and the with the right timing. I’m really happy to have Mario with us once again, our two seasons together have created a strong bond with the team, something we are very proud of. I’m also happy to have Gattuso onboard: last year in Monza we fell just short of a deserved win due to a puncture, but the feeling between Stefano and our personnel was flawless, giving us the opportunity to aim for the top spot straight out of the box. With such premises, we are really looking forward to the start of the season”.
